Blue Grass Airport Embarking On Maintenance Upgrades

A new program aimed at enhancing operational safety at Blue Grass Airport is moving forward with federal funding.

The multi-year project will involve the realignment of the airport’s main taxiway and the relocation of a Maintenance/Snow Removal Equipment Complex and Public Safety Building.

The airport is breaking ground this month on the $15M complex, which spokesperson Amy Caudill says will give the airport more space for crucial pieces of equipment.

"As many travelers know, when you have a flight that's going out in the winter time you certainly want to be able to get out of the airport quick and not have delays, so this complex actually allows us to house the many pieces of equipment that are used to keep our ramps, taxiways, and runways safe," she explains.

Using average annual snowfall, the square feet of critical pavement, and a recommended 30 minute clear time, FAA guidelines show the airport needs at least 21 pieces of snow removal equipment to plow the runways and taxiways.

The new complex is set for completion in 2015 with the full project to be finished in 2018.
