Coal Carbon Capture Project Now Under Way

lanereport.com

Construction of Kentucky’s first carbon capture pilot system has officially begun at a power plant near Harrodsburg.

The ribbon was cut this morning at the Kentucky Utilities Company’s E.W. Brown Generating Station, the site where a new megawatt-scale carbon capture unit is being built.

The technology was developed through the Center for Applied Energy Research at the University of Kentucky.  When coal is burned, it produces what’s called a flu gas which contains the nitrogen that comes from the air and the carbon dioxide that’s made from burning the coal.  Research Director Rodney Andrews said the rest of the process uses a solvent to remove the carbon dioxide.

The $19.5 million dollar project was made possible with the help of a $14.5 million competitive financial assistance award from the Department of Energy and cost-sharing funding from several state and national organizations and agencies.
