Cameras Credited With Deterring Crime On UK's Campus

The University of Kentucky's police chief is crediting cameras placed throughout the Lexington campus with deterring crime.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that approximately 1,000 cameras have essentially given police vision in places where they were once blind. UK Police Chief Joe Monroe says cameras were installed in high traffic areas or places where they were problems in the past.

The cameras were used to monitor celebrations during UK's progression through the NCAA men's basketball tournament this year. Police arrested dozens of people whose celebrating got out of hand.

The university has spent nearly $5 million from campus funds on the new camera monitoring system. Monroe says installation began last fall, and there could be a total of 2,000 cameras once the system is fully implemented.
