State Universities Caught In The Middle Of Budget Fight

The Kentucky House and Senate are at odds over which university priorities to fund in the budget.

While a House plan cuts operating funds for higher education, it also provides for a number of bonded construction projects.

Senate President Robert Stivers told reporters Tuesday he believes there is more support for the Senate plan, which would reverse the House formulation.

"We had much discussion that there was a lot of universities that felt that their operating revenues and appropriations were more important than there bonding and their construction," he said.

Stivers says his chamber’s version allows for more consistency in university programs and addresses concerns about growing debt in the House-approved budget.

The House and Senate must now reconcile their spending plans.
