A cyber security bill that won overwhelming approval in the House this session has stalled in the Senate.
The measure, crafted with the help of State Auditor Adam Edelen, would beef up cyber security for government agencies and require those entities to report any breaches affecting personal information to the public.
Edelen, who is a possible contender for Kentucky governor in 2016, is blaming political considerations for the lack of a hearing in the Senate. He says Republicans are hesitant to hand him a legislative victory.
"This is truly a broad bipartisan bill. Our issue is that we haven't gotten a hearing in the Senate. 30 days after passage we've still got no guarantee of a hearing and I think that's outrageous," Edelen says.
House Majority Leader Damon Thayer has said he’s concerned the bill could add another unfunded mandate on local governments.
The measure passed the House 99 to 1 in January.
