Dueling Developers Targeting Rupp Area For Cinema Complexes

Two movie theater groups are eyeing the area around Rupp Arena for major development.

The Herald Leader reports that a deal has been inked for a multiplex theater at the corner of South Broadway and High, directly across the street from a proposed site for an IMAX theater that’s still in the talking stages.

The dueling developers are Krikorian Premier Theater group out of Los Angeles and Dallas-based Look Cinemas.  The Krikorian multiplex, scheduled to be built this summer, will have a total of 11 movie screens, a bowling alley, sports bar, and hospitality room.

Meanwhile, the Look proposal, which still needs multiple approvals from the city’s Board of Architectural Review, would construct an IMAX theater complex on the opposite corner of the block.

That lot where the Look group wants to build is in the historic South Hill District and they’re proposing to relocate an 1808 house on the property to make room for their complex.
