LOUISVILLE, Ky. – John Veitch has been fired from his post as Kentucky's chief racing steward as he awaits a ruling on whether he should be fined as a result of his performance during the 2010 Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs.

Veitch was fired Monday by Public Protection Secretary Robert Vance.

Kentucky Horse Racing Commission spokesman Dick Brown said no reason was given for the firing and declined further comment, saying he couldn't discuss personnel matters.

Veitch is accused of not performing his duties during last year's Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic by failing to pursue whether Life At Ten was fit to run and whether she should have been sent to a test barn after her last-place finish. He has denied doing anything wrong.
