Lexington, KY – The Postal Service's Processing and Distribution Center in Lexington is among 252 centers targeted for closure as the USPS looks to consolidate its facilities. But the public will get a chance to have their say about the proposal at a meeting tonight.
With the internet taking a sizable bite out of its business, the Postal Service is considering moving mail processing operations from its Lexington Processing and Distribution Center to Louisville and possibly Knoxville. David Walton with the US Postal Service says citizens opposed to the plan should know no final decisions have been made.
"This is not a done deal. We're still in the study phase. Again, I think a lot of people have the misconception that we've made our minds up and that's not true," Walton says.
The Postal Service has also pinpointed 3700 post offices it may retire in the coming years. Walton says, while the changes are painful, the service has to adapt to innovations in global communication. Citizens can register their opinions about the plan from 7 to 9 PM tonight/Monday night at the Fayette County Schools Central Office.
