Lexington, KY – Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes coasted to victory in the Tuesday night's election for Secretary of State. The Lexington lawyer took home more votes than any other Democrat on Tuesday's ballot.

In her first bid for public office, Alison Lundergan Grimes, the daughter of former Kentucky Democratic Party chair Jerry Lundergan, won 61 percent of the vote. Grimes, who has said she would support automatic restoration of voting rights for felons and opposes a photo ID requirement at the polls, sounded a familiar note in her acceptance speech.

"As your Secretary of State, making sure all Kentuckians voices are heard, whether they live in Park Plaza, on a park bench, or in a parked car is my priority, friends," Grimes said in her acceptance speech.

Grimes fended off a challenge from businessman Bill Johnson, who offered a brief, gracious concession at Republican headquarters Tuesday night.

"It's a difficult night, but listen, I'm going to go back to work, find a job, and just be happy in the private sector," Johnson said.

Grimes will succeed Elaine Walker, who was appointed Secretary of State earlier this year after Republican Trey Grayson resigned.
