Lexington, KY – Newberry says it's a noble effort to want to preserve buildings, but he'd also like to see that same fervor employed toward maintaining the city's purchase of development rights program. That's a program that compensates land owners outside the urban service area for not developing their land.

Attendees also questioned the mayor on other downtown concerns, including the controversial construction design of a new CVS pharmacy on East Main Street. The mayor said because the city currently has no design guidelines, he can't compel the architect to make wholesale changes to the building so that it fits in better with adjacent structures.

Vice Mayor Jim Gray, Newberry's opponent in the November election, is scheduled to talk to the same group on July 20th.
