KENTUCKY IS FAMOUS FOR HORSES...
AND PHOTOGRAPHERS!

Photographer of the Year Jahi Chikwendiu with Kenyan primary school students - 2003

Over the years, Lexington native Jahi Chikwendiu has more than once made a name for himself as a photographer. This year is no different - he's been named Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association's Eyes of History 2008 competition juried by National Geographic magazine. He also took first place honors in the Picture Story/Feature and Portfolio categories as well as second place in the Picture Story/News category.

Chikwendui got his start at the Lexington Herald-Leader before landing his current gig with The Washington Post.

Another Icon of artistic outlet dies as the digital wave continues to consumes everything in its path. Polaroid claims film stock will be available through 2009. Doubtful as Instant enthusiasts gobble the prize like the last Thanksgiving roll. 70 years wasn't long enough.

John and Yoko: A New York Love Story

The soon-to-be-released work of photographer Allen Tannenbaum captures the final days of John Lennon. Tannenbaum, while photographing John and Yoko in Central park, asked to tag along to the video shoot for Double Fantasy - Lennon's  last recording. 150 never before seen photographs from that and the days that  followed Lennon's death are included.

Pam Oldfield Meade has created a distinct and identifying style with mixed media. Her work is realistic in a refreshingly abstract manner yet they remain noticeably rooted in a place; her family farm in Eastern Kentucky.

Pearls Before Swine cartoonist Stephan Pastis spoke with tonic's Dr. Greg Davis about the debut of his irreverent strip in the Lexington Herald-Leader earlier this year. Pastis' dark humor is often sandwiched between lighter fare from older artists, including some that he lampoons in his own strip.

Rising out of Nebraska's sandy plain comes a vintage American car lot...of sorts.
It's called
Carhenge; an exact replica of England's ancient Stonehenge. This year marks its 20th anniversary as a tourist haven.
