Another Icon of artistic outlet dies as the digital wave continues to consumes everything in its path. Polaroid claims film stock will be available through 2009. Doubtful as Instant enthusiasts gobble the prize like the last Thanksgiving roll. 70 years wasn't long enough.

Danny Federici
1950 - 2008

E Street Band keyboardist Federici died of Melanoma April 17. He was 58. Known as "the silent one", for 40 years he was friends and musical companion to Bruce Springsteen, staying active as a session player during the E Street Band layoffs with Joan Armitrading, Graham Parker, and others. His last performance was a guest appearnace with Springsteen in Indianapolis March 20. He is surviced by his wife and three kids.

National Juried Exhibition

Xavier University Art Gallery
September 26 - November 7, 2008

Open to artists over the age of 18 residing in North America. Entries must be original works not previously shown at Xavier University Art Gallery. All 2D and 3D art created in the last two years (2006-08) will be considered except video, performance and installation. Entries must not exceed 48x90 inches or 100 pounds. No entry that requires the artist to be present for moving or assembly will be accepted. entry fee of $25 for up to three entries.
Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, May 30, 2008.

Juneteenth Legacy Theatre seeks youth performers and groups

up to 21 years old for Juneteenth at Apollo, a competitive community talent showcase. Cash prizes of $100, $75, and $50, plus free workshops on auditioning and presentation skills. Performances are June 7th, 14th, and 21st. Entry fees are $5 for individuals and $10 for groups. Juneteenth also has roles for 45 actors and dancers of diverse ethnic and age ranges. OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMUNITY ARTS PARTICIPATION
NO PREVIOUS ART EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Artists Mary Yates and Joyce Ogden are overseeing the creation of a hand-made clay tile mural in the exit lobby of the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections Facility in downtown Louisville.Inmates and their loved ones have been contributing drawings which are being photographically transferred to flat ceramic tiles to become part of the mural. Yates and Ogden are looking for groups who can help make some of the artwork and tiles. Interested groups are invited to visit Spalding University’s campus and work with Joyce Ogden and her students in a workshop format on one or more of the following dates: May 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29 and June 3, 5, 10 and 12 from 12:30-4:00 PM. Special arrangements may also be made for one or both artists to facilitate tile making workshops at other times either on or off campus.

Bardstown---the first time in Kentucky---street painting festival.  Artists can participate at no cost--we supply the chalk. Must be over 18, no commercial messages in the art, and art is appropriate for viewers of all ages. Benefits from event will go to the Advocacy & Support Center (ASC); a private, nonprofit mental health agency providing services to victims of rape and sexual abuse.

Frieze Writer's Prize 2008

Frieze magazine writer's prize is an annual award to discover and promote new art critics. Entrants must submit one 700 word review of a recent contemporary art exhibition. Entries must be submitted in English, but it may be a translation (this must be acknowledged). Entrants must be over 18 years old. To qualify, entrants may only previously have had a maximum of three pieces of writing published in any national or regional newspaper or magazine. The winning entrant will be commissioned to write a review for the October issue of frieze and be awarded 2000 GBP. Two further awards of 500 GBP will be made for outstanding entries.

A ROOM OF HER OWN FOUNDATION INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR
2009 LITERARY GIFT OF FREEDOM AWARD
A Room Of Her Own Foundation is dedicated to helping women artists achieve the privacy and financial support necessary to pursue their art. The foundation annually provides an award of $50,000 to a woman writer.  The  foundation's 2009 Literary Gift of Freedom Award will be given to an American woman writer who is a U.S. citizen and will be living in the U.S. during the  grant period.  Acceptable genres for this grant are poetry, playwriting, creative nonfiction, and fiction.  The program requires a $35.00 application fee.

The internationally renowned fiber artist and UK professor Arturo Alonzo Sandoval has been making headlines recently with his ever-compelling artwork. Sandoval's elaborate installation Memorial: 5191 examines his personal beliefs on life after death through the 49 victims of the ill-fated Comair flight.

Recognized for his work honoring the Tuskegee Airmen, ceramics associate professor, Bobby Scroggins, created a sculpture of Willa Beatrice Brown Chappell, the Kentucky woman who trained more than 200 of the airmen

Associate professor of art history, Robert Jensen, was honored for Vollard and Cezanne: An Anatomy of a Relationship, the lead essay in the exhibition catalogue to Cezanne to Picasso: Ambroise Vollard, Patron of the Avant-Garde showing at The Met in NYC, Art Institute of Chicago, and Musee d'Orsay in Paris, France
