Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton is stepping down from the post at the end of the 2014.

In a press release late Thursday, the district’s top school official announced he’s accepted the executive director spot with the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents next year.

“Although I did not enter into this decision lightly, I am very excited by the opportunity to work with other superintendents and impact educational improvement on a broader scale,” he said.

Shelton took the reins in Fayette County in 2011 and is currently involved in implementing changes to the district’s financial management systems recommended by State Auditor Adam Edelen in September. That audit found no criminal activity, but did identify a number of “troubling” policies and conflicts within the district.

Attention now shifts to the Fayette County Board of Education, which will begin the process of searching for a replacement at its next meeting.

Shelton’s last day is December 31, 2014.
