Public Meeting Held on Final Stretch of Legacy Trail

Chase Cavanaugh

Over 85 Lexingtonians crowded into the Lyric Theater to hear about the next design phase for the Legacy Trail.

Consultants with Strand Associates presented two different routes for the trail segment linking Jefferson Street to its Terminus at the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden.  One would follow Fourth Street all the way East, while the other would turn onto Elm Tree Lane and follow Third Street.  The crowd was split about the choice of routes, as well as whether cycling paths should have dedicated lanes or share space with motor vehicles.  Project Manager Chase Wright says the feedback, along with a route decision, will help the team move out of the preliminary design phase.

“We would then move into final design where we look at the details and really figure out how intersections will be approached and that would take place shortly after a decision on the final alternative has been made," he said.

Keith Lovan, Senior Engineer for the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government, anticipates the city will make a final route decision in the next few months, and construction to begin next year.  More information on the Legacy Trail project can be found online at lexingtonky.gov/legacytrail
