Fayette County Public Schools’ new superintendent began his first day on the job Monday.

After taking the time to address new classified employees at Bryan Station High School, Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk held a press conference to discuss his initial priorities. These include ensuring that everything is in place for the first day of school, as well as getting better acquainted with the various departments of FCPS. In the long term, he says he will focus on boosting achievement, both for proficient students, and those who are struggling.
"We want to get them to be globally competitive, you think about our mission, it’s preparing students to excel in a global society, so how are we doing that? In the other, where students who are reaching toward proficiency, the novice group you talk about, we got to get them to proficient faster. What are we currently doing, what’s working, what’s not working, and what we need to discontinue, what do we need to add in order to get all our students to that finish line where the graduate and prepare for college, career, and life?" he said.
Before his hiring by FCPS, Caulk was superintendent of Portland Public Schools, the largest district in Maine. His predecessor, Tom Shelton, resigned in November.
