In this week’s Local Music Monday, WUKY’s DeBraun Thomas features a musician who’s gone from sideman to front-man.
Dave Cobb is a multi-instrumentalist who’s been a part of the music scene for over a decade. While Cobb has been a sideman in many different bands, he found a new role with a new band playing his own songs. In 2009 Cobb started the band The Nativity Singers. In the group Cobb brings a unique approach to guitar he says fits with the band’s identity.
“I don’t play a lot of chords, I try to sort of play lead guitar and rhythm guitar at the same time and kinda keep my fingers moving and kinda fill up as much space as possible, just, the goal is to see how much sound we can get with three people and so that works out pretty well with the guys I’m playing with right now.”
The Nativity Singers are a three piece band featuring Nick Coleman on Bass and Keyboards, Hiram Lee on Drums with Cobb singing and playing guitar. In 2012 the band released an EP that was recorded at Shangri-La Productions here in Lexington. Cobb says a big part of the band’s evolution has come from their ability to create a wall of sound.
“I like the effect of when I hear a band and I can’t tell exactly how they’re making a sound or I can’t distinguish one instrument from the other, it all feels like it’s all feels like it’s moving together as a single unit and um, I don’t have a formula for writing songs but I think that’s something I kinda come back to a lot.”
Dave Cobb performs with Wol and Weeps in addition to The Nativity Singers. The Nativity Singers will be performing on September 27th at the Green Lantern.
