Lexington Herald-Leader Making More Cuts

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky's second-largest newspaper has announced another round of job cuts and furloughs.

The Lexington Herald-Leader announced Monday it would eliminate 10 jobs and remaining employees will take a second furlough week this year.

Publisher Rufus Friday said jobs will be lost across news, general administration, circulation and operations divisions. He said they include two members of the newspaper's executive committee, whom he declined to name.

After the reductions, the Herald-Leader will have the equivalent of 216 full-time employees, down from 370 at the time of the newspaper's first round of layoffs in June 2008.

The Herald-Leader is owned by The McClatchy Co., based in Sacramento, Calif.

Friday said in a memo to employees that revenues remain negative and the economic recovery has been slower than management had hoped for.
