Have Something To Say About Kentucky? The Kentucky Historical Society Is Listening

What makes Kentucky, Kentucky?  The Kentucky Historical Society is posing that essential question to people who attend one of their Kentucky@225 listening tour sessions.  The next one takes place this weekend at Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park.

Kent Whitworth, executive director of KHS says they've been criss-crossing the state since January gathering input.

He tells WUKY members have been interacting with people from all over Kentucky, (from) "different ages and stages...different backgrounds; some have been eighth generation residents, and others who may have only been here a few years." He says they've all shared how they want to make the commonwealth better.

Whitworth added that the historical society will use the feedback to set important future priorities.

"This is how we're going to shift our programming and services and frankly, this is how we're going to shift what we collect...because we've heard from you what you value and what you treasure about being a Kentuckian," Whitworth said.

Attendees are shown a 2-minute video celebrating Kentucky’s 225th year of statehood, and then the conversation turns to how their own communities have contributed. Session participants are asked to keep a record of their responses so they can continue to reflect on them during the state’s yearlong birthday celebration.

The next listening event takes place this Saturday at 3 p.m. at Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park.
