Explosion At Lexington Home Sends 3 To The Hospital

LEX-18

Three people were hurt and taken to the hospital after something exploded on Nakomi Drive in Lexington. The fire department is on the scene and they say they are investigating a hazardous device but haven’t given any more details. They say people were at the home for an estate sale and someone was looking at items when something ignited.

Update (12:36 p.m.): Fire officials say three people were injured in an explosion during an estate sale at a house in Kentucky's second-largest city.

Lexington Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Whittaker says investigators are trying to determine what exploded Friday. He says the blast occurred when someone picked up an "unknown item" that ignited inside the house.

Whittaker described it as a "low-level explosion" that caused no structural damage inside the house.

He says three people were taken to the hospital. He says one person had a "fairly significant" hand injury, another suffered a leg injury and the third person had a concussion-type injury.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called to the scene to assist local authorities in the investigation.
