Andy Nicholson, Quimbo Capture Rolex Crown

New Zealand's Andy Nicholson, aboard Quimbo, captured the 2013 Rolex Crown at the Three Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Andrew Nicholson of New Zealand was the big winner of the 2013 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event Sunday at the Kentucky Horse Park.  He did it aboard Quimbo, a Spanish-bred horse that wasn't quite good enough to show-jump.    Nicholson also finished third on English ex-racehorse Calico Joe.

Kentucky Convict Seeks DNA Testing in 1987 Murder

NEWPORT, Ky. -- A man who has served 26 years in prison for a 1987 murder in Kentucky will have a hearing to argue for DNA testing on evidence that he believes will clear him of the crime.

Campbell Circuit Court Judge Fred Stine on Friday scheduled arguments on May 24 in the motion by William "Ricky" Virgil, who was convicted in the death of Retha Welch. The commonwealth attorney's office asked for more time to prepare its arguments.

Students Learn A Lesson On Poverty

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Franklin County High School students were robbing banks, being evicted and nursing babies recently - all within the confines of the school cafeteria.

The actions were part of a poverty simulation put on by the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky. It was the organization's first event at a school.

Students in the social studies department were offered extra credit to attend the simulation, and teachers were offered two hours of training credit. Participation was voluntary.

Nicholson Now 1-2 On Final Day Of Rolex

New Zealander Andy Nicholson is the top rider to beat heading into the final day of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A superb effort by Andrew Nicholson aboard Quimbo and Calico Joe respectively has the New Zealander occupying the top two spots heading into the final day of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Nicholson, a six-time Olympian, completed two flawless trips over the Cross Country course.  For anyone else to win, Nicholson would have to knock down two fences aboard both horses Sunday.  Considering he's currently the top rider in the world, such an outcome seems unlikely.

Some In Eastern Kentucky Wondering About Life After Coal

WHITESBURG, Ky. - New statistics released by the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet show a staggering drop in coal production and a sharp rise in unemployment in the southeastern Coalfields, particularly in Letcher, Harlan, Knott and Perry counties.  According to the report, Eastern Kentucky coal production has reached the lowest level since 1965.

Fox-Pitt Charges To The Lead In Rolex

Britain's William Fox-Pitt and Chilli Morning are the tandem to beat this weekend at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - William Fox-Pitt of Great Britain is poised to capture his third Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, with a commanding lead over Andrew Nicholson of New Zealand. 

Fox-Pitt won the dressage phase of the competition Friday aboard Chilli Morning with a score of 33.3 penalties.  Nicholson on Quimbo stands second with a score of 38.0.  He also holds third place with his mount Calico Joe, (40.8).

Lawsuit Filed Against State Over Redistricting

COVINGTON, Ky. -- A lawsuit has been filed against Gov. Steve Beshear and other state officials and politicians over the legislature's failure this year to draw new political boundaries in Kentucky.

The lawsuit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Covington. The plaintiffs include Boone County Clerk Kenny Brown, two judge-executives and nine northern Kentucky residents. They say the lack of a redistricting plan is leaving northern Kentucky without adequate representation.

NAACP Discusses Minority Student Enrollment with UK Medical School Leaders

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Officials from the Lexington branch of the NAACP met with leaders of the University of Kentucky’s College of Medicine Friday to discuss concerns about the low number of African American and Hispanic students enrolled at the school.
