OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY

Establishment of training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher-level positions.

DATE CONDUCTED: Ongoing

STAFF INVOLVED: Tom Godell (GM) and the University of Kentucky Office of Human Resource Development

WUKY's licensee (University of Kentucky) continues to offer a wide array of free professional development workshops to all staff. These range from "The Basics of Leadership" to "Mediation Skills" to "Time Management". WUKY staff were notified of these opportunities quarterly and encouraged to attend as appropriate. New courses are offered each semester, and thus staff members have many opportunities to hone or improve their skills in a variety of areas. WUKY’s Program Director and Accountant Principal concluded their year-long Essential Leader program during the reporting period.

Provision of training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination.

DATE CONDUCTED: Ongoing

STAFF INVOLVED: Tom Godell (GM) and the University of Kentucky Office of Human Resource Development

The University of Kentucky makes available to all WUKY staff ongoing training courses designed to foster equal opportunity and diversity. Courses taught include "Basics of Diversity", "Gender Styles in Communication", "Gender Styles in Leadership", and "Preventing Sexual Harassment". Some of these training opportunities are available on-line as well as through traditional classroom training. As noted above WUKY’s Program Director and Accountant Principal concluded their year-long Essential Leader program during the reporting period. In addition the Program Director, on the basis of her participation in the above, was one of a small group of individuals on campus who were selected to participate in UK’s Humanity Academy, an on-going diversity training initiative.

Participation in at least four (4) job fairs by station personnel who have substantial responsibility in making hiring decisions.

DATE CONDUCTED: November 6, 2008

STAFF INVOLVED: Alan Lytle (News Director)

WUKY participated actively in the annual University of Kentucky School of Journalism Career Fair in the Grehan Building on the UK campus. We distributed literature about WUKY internships and employment opportunities to the attendees. The group was racially diverse and included a mix of both males and females. We collected five resumes at the event.

Establishment of an internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment.

DATE CONDUCTED: Ongoing

STAFF INVOLVED: Tom Godell (General Manager), Alan Lytle (News Director), Kathy Hight (Accountant Principal)

During the reporting period, WUKY continued to operate its internship program. We hosted four paid interns from the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University. We participated in Summer Youth Employment programs offered by both UK and the city of Lexington, providing training to four additional interns. Finally, we hosted an unpaid intern from Lexington’s Henry Clay High School.
